New Year bird. These were taken  right before a storm and her feathers  were fluttering in the strong wind.

To me one of the most beautiful Kingfishers in this region, the intense blue and orange look so surreal.

The Quickest Way To Her Heart Is Through Her Stomach: Blue-Eared Kingfishers

22nd May 2011, Kemensah, Selangor

These birds have been receiving a lot of attention lately. At last I found a bit of time to actually sit down and  observe their behavior in their natural habitat. This is what I saw….

A young female resting  on her favourite perch…a bamboo overhanging a pond.

DSC_1289

The male came with a small fish  and  started moving closer and closer towards the female.

DSC_1271

He gestured with his head indicating that he was offering  the fish to her.

DSC_1274

She took the fish .  The shutter speed  ( 1/125s) was not fast enough to freeze the movement of the heads at the moment when the fish was passed to the female.

Gulp.

DSC_1278

The male was probably  thinking ‘Ok,  was that fish enough to get her undivided attention?’.

Both birds started diving into the pond below to clean themselves. The male flew off after igniting the booster rocket!

The young female left but she  came back  later with a sizeable fish between her bill and… she had the whole fish for herself !

Looking Good: Blue-Eared Kingfisher

6th March 2011, Taman Melawati, Selangor

I went to check on the pair of adult Blue-eared Kingfishers, and from what I saw they were doing just fine. The pair were seen hunting at their favourite spot, in fact from their favourite branch. Having this knowledge will gain you access to some pretty close-up shots of this tiny Kingfisher.

They were caring for a young bird the last time I saw them  about six months ago,  my guess is that the  young bird had  moved to a new area.

This one is a male with a blackish lower mandible.

Photos Sir? : Blue-Eared Kingfisher

23rd October 2010, Kemensah, Selangor

There were no birds to shoot last Saturday. Luckily this juvenile Blue-Eared Kingfisher decided to drop in to have her pictures  taken. This was the closest that I had managed to get to this King. It wasn’t the perfect perch but then  beggars can’t be choosers!

I’m Back : Blue-Eared Kingfisher

25th September 2010, Kemensah, Selangor

Today is my first outing after  a month of  being away. Back in Kemensah,  I’m slowly trying to get into the rhythm of things. I thought I’d begin with the Blue- eared Kingfishers- they are always great subjects to shoot.

The juvenile seemed happy to oblige,  she kept coming back to the same area to hunt._DSC0195_f

I stumbled upon the adult and juvenile birds resting together as I entered the trail at the far end of the pond.

Fit for a King

24th April 2010, Kemensah, Selangor.

I  was  waiting for the Blue Banded Kingfisher, trying very hard not to be seen. Somehow I was spotted by two guys from the Paintball operator who politely asked me to leave the area for fear of being hit by stray bullets. Apparently they were about to have  a guerilla-style shootout inside the jungle where I was having my stakeout. Packed my gear and started walking out from the clearing  towards the trail leading to the fish pond. My eyes suddenly caught a glimpse of  something blue on a bamboo over the stream- a juvenile female Blue-Eared  .  So far I’ve shot her  perched on  ropes and drainage pipes, this time it’s in a natural setting fit for the King.

I had to be quick before the bullets started flying!

Thriving: Blue-Eared Kingfisher

3rd April 2010, Kemensah, Selangor

I see  Blue-Eared Kingfishers on almost every trip now in Kemensah.

Glad to see that the species is doing well  here. This is a different bird than the one shot a fortnight ago,  a juvenile female. The female has an orangey  lower mandible as opposed to the black of the male. The cheek is still reddish indicating that it’s a juvenile bird.

I’ll be trying for  two different species of  Kingfishers tomorrow, hope they are  there.
