Just Shoot Me :Raffle’s Malkohas

10th July 2010, Kemensah, Selangor.

Now you see me, now you don’t. That’s how it was with these two birds but you can always count on them when things are a bit slow and there’s not much else to shoot.

This male  Raffles Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus chlorophaeus) local name: Cenok Kerak, was very obliging and started posing when the camera was aimed at him. Instead of the usual game of hide & seek in between the leaves, he stayed out in the open long enough  for me to take a fair number of shots.

I was attracted to the call of a pair of Raffles Malkoha (Rhinortha chlorophaeus). They are very shy birds.  Difficult to get a full view of the birds which preferred the security of the dense foliage.
Makes me chuckle every time I see these photos. The sound that they make resemble the moaning sound  made by my son  urging me to stop the car in the middle of the Karak Highway. He had a tummy ache that morning and had to go…… . I was doing 180 just to reach the next  Pump station!  Lewis Hamilton, you need Ilyas in your car to win the next Grand Prix.

This Raffle’s Malkoha landed for less than 5 seconds and then she was gone.

View from the birding area . Kemensah’s version of Gorilla Mountain. No gorillas here, George!

Just discovered that my son Ilyas had taken a photo (partly hidden) of a female Rufous-Collared Kingfisher in Kemensah a week ago which I earlier thought was a Common Kingfisher. I intend to get better photos of the Blue-Eared Kingfisher as well so maybe Mission Kingfisher is next on the agenda.

Seeing a Rufous Piculet for the first time, it struck me as to how small the bird was. It’s really tiny!
