Local Name:  Tirjup Rimau

Scientific Name: Lanius tigrinus

Equipment: Nikon 1 V3 + Nikkor AFS-VR 400mm f/2.8 ED-VR

Drying herself after taking a dip  in a  nearby stream. Surely a most welcomed relief especially on a hot day like this.  She appears to be moulting, growing the distinctive grey and black feathers on the head.

Plaintive Cuckoo & Tiger Shrike

25th February 2012, Kemensah, Selangor

Common Name: Plaintive Cuckoo

Local Name: Sewah Mati Anak

Scientific Name: Cocamantis merulinus

Plaintive Cuckoo has two different calls, one of them is so similar to the call of the Rusty-breasted Cuckoos that sometimes you do  get surprised when a different bird flies into view while you’re expecting it to to be the other.

Adult Male Tiger Shrike

30th April 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highlands, Pahang

Most Tiger Shrikes that we see here are the first-winter birds and there’s always some excitement out  in the field when an adult is sighted.

I know that there’s a pair of this Lesser Shortwing in the area but unfortunately only the female was seen after an hour long stakeout.

Today’s Highlight : Tiger Shrike

31st October 2010, Old Pump House Road, Genting Highland, Pahang

Local Name: Tirjup Rimau.  Scientific Name: (Lanius tigrinus)

A vertical ray of light was shining though the leaves, directly onto this bird producing very dramatic light  & shadows. These images were shot  without the use of flash so  as to capture/ retain  the highlights on the feathers. Tough but very satisfying in the end._DSC0270

Adult Female Tiger Shrike

14th November 2009, Taman Rimba Ampang, Selangor

_DSC0740 They say that adult Tiger Shrikes are hard to come by. I have never come across any adults before and all my previous photos of the Tiger Shrikes have been of the juveniles. Today an adult female  alighted onto a branch about 15 feet from us._DSC0725_f

Tiger Shrike of Kemensah

Kemensah, Selangor

These photos were taken on 7th March 2009 after an early morning downpour. They are the clearest photos of the Tiger Shrike (Lanius tigrinus , local name: Tirjup Rimau ) that I have. One thing I can’t figure out is how come there’s a V at the end of the tail.
