Birds of Bentong

22nd & 23rd  May 2010, Bentong, Pahang.

DSC_0148

We had a family gathering  at my brother-in-law’s orchard, a beautiful place  on high ground with the hills of Bentong as the backdrop.

I was curious as to what species of bird  I would find there. Spent 2 hours on Saturday afternoon and 3 hours Sunday morning  to see what I could photograph.

The result was quite interesting.

Either a female Brown-Throated  or Red throated Sunbird  (shot by Ilyas).  I’m more inclined to go for the latter  because of the orange tinge at the throat.

We started the day with this couple, Orange-Backed Woodpeckers (Reinwardtipicus validus). I have shot the female bird before but never the male.

The male landed on the same spot  where the female  had been after she called  for him from a higher perch. It got me quite confused (looking at the photos) thinking that they were the same bird.

Notice the stronger red on the underparts, cheek and crown of the male.

The  only shot of the male. He landed for about 5 sec. before flying off with the female.

Lifer 4: A  female Orange-Backed Woodpecker (Reinwardtipicus validus).  A pair of them were on the same tree but the male was hidden behind the trunk. Quite a large woodpecker (30cm).
