Red Headed Trogon

30th September 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang.

A trogon appeared quite late in the afternoon at the Trogon Valley (Telecom Loop)  but stayed high in the canopy against strong backlighting. Although the pictures on the camera screen was kind of blur I had a feeling that this was a  new trogon for me. Then I saw the white breast patch and immediately I knew that it had to be a Red-headed Trogon.. a lifer

Sorry for the quality of these photos for  they are just record shots. The Trogon only  decided to come down lower about half an hour before sunset and the condition was already very dark  .

Juvenile Male : Scarlet-Rumped Trogon

9th  July 2011, Ulu Perdik, Selangor

He looks  very similar to an adult female but this is a  juvenile male. The red feathers on the rump is just  barely visible.

See the adults here

Scarlet-Rumped Trogons

3rd July 2011, Ulu Perdik, Selangor

I went to Ulu Perdik after hearing that the Green Broadbills were around hoping to close  the chapter on my Malaysian broadbills. Unfortunately for me the Broadbills decided to have an off day.

These Trogons were a pleasant consolation for what would have been a rather  unfruitful outing. She looks like she has just been bathing at a paint factory……..simply an amazing myriad of colours on one bird.

Orange-Breasted Trogon

13th February 2011, Bukit Tinggi, Pahang.

I  had photographed an Orange-breasted Trogon which had lost its tail during my last visit to Bukit Tinggi. If this was the same bird then she had regrown herself  a beautiful looking tail.

Hello again: Orange-Breasted Trogon

24th January 2010,  Bukit Tinggi, Pahang

 _DSC0706
During the last trip to Bukit Tinggi we were greeted by this bird. Today he was a bit late to say Hello, probably he knew  we’d be busy shooting the other orange celebrity bird.

Scarlet-Rumped Trogon

14th November 2009, Taman Rimba Ampang, Selangor

Lifer:  A male Scarlet-Rumped Trogon (Harpactes duvaucelii)  was resting on a tree across the stream from where we were. No way to get closer, this long range shot is the only decent photo of this beautiful bird.

Trogon of Bukit Tinggi, Pahang, 30 May 2009

Bird photography is a combination of technique, being at the right place at the right time and most of all ‘luck’.

Went looking for Trogons at Bukit Tinggi and luck was surely on my side today! Immediately after parking the car near the gate to the Japanese Garden I was greeted by the sight of a pair of Trogons.

A female Orange-Breasted Trogon (Harpactes oreskios). The male was somewhere nearby but not clearly visible. I love the beautiful combination of striking colours and the vermiculations on the wings.
