I get butterflies in my stomach

27th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

Not exactly a butterfly but  you get my meaning.

A Mountain Leaf-Warbler  giving  a moth the works, body parts were flying all over the place. Just gruesome, this is definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Arachnothera Galore

20th March 2011, Kemensah, Selangor

There are five species of Spiderhunters that can be seen here and on this day four species had decided to spend their morning  slurping nectar in one small area of an orchard deep inside Kemensah.

1. The Yellow-Eared Spiderhunter (Arachnothera  chrysogenys)  , with the yellow ear coverts!

2.  The Spectacled Spiderhunter (Arachnothera  flavigaster), they are the largest  of the Spiderhunters. Easily identifiable by their broad eyerings

3.  The Grey-Breasted Spiderhunter  (Arachnothera affinis). This one was resting on a palm frond after she was chased away by the Spectacled Spiderhunter.

4.  The Little Spiderhunter (Arachnothera longirostra)  drying herself in the morning sunshine. Yes, she is the little one compared to the others.

Only the Long-Billed Spiderhunters were absent which  would  have otherwise  made it a full house.

A couple: Siberian Thrushes

19th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

Glad to have captured both male and female Siberian Thrushes before the season ends and the birds fly back North. Missed the male bird  when I was in Fraser’s Hill  a fortnight ago.

Update: I was at Gunung Ulu Kali today 27 /03/11 and they were not seen.  Maybe they’ve gone back!

Mountain Leaf-Warbler

19th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

It rained late afternoon and into the night the day before I went to Ulu Kali . In the morning the birds were really hungry and were clamering for whatever they could eat.  A night of rain usually means fog in the morning….. and it was thick fog that came with some light drizzle an hour after I arrived. I had to shoot through fog for this little beauty the reason for the colours being slightly subdued.DSC_6466

Streaked Wren-Babbler

19th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

A confiding Streaked Wren-Babbler got  really close to my camera.  The weather wasn’t exactly the best  for photography but luckily the thick fog and drizzle didn’t hamper my attempt to capture this little beauty.

Female Siberian Thrush

12th March 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang

She hopped across the road in front of us while walking round the Telekom loop. She didn’t seem intimidated by our presence as we got closer to  her, we were able to get to about 12ft from her. I was later told by other birders that there were about 16 Siberian Thrushes near Green Acres earlier in the morning.

Silver-Eared Mesia

12th March 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang

They are the official mascot of Fraser’s Hill. Although they are supposed to be fairly common I only saw one SE Mesia during my previous visit to Fraser’s Hill. This time there were  hoardes of this bird coming to pick left over worms at the feeding area in front of Jelai Resort.

There were three of this birds foraging in the trees in front of Jelai Resort. Like other Minlas landing  a clean shot is a tall order.

Successful Breeding: Crested Goshawk

6th March 2011, Taman Melawati, Selangor

I  was aware of the presence of a pair of Crested Goshawk in Taman Melawati   about a year ago (back in February 2010). Sometimes you would bump into them catching mice near  Taman Melawati Secondary School. I was  curious to  find out more about the pair when I was told by my son Ilyas that he had seen  4 hawks in the trees in front of his school.  Hopped on my  little scooter   for a two-minute cruise to the school . Upon parking the bike I scanned the area and immediately spotted one adult Goshawk  preening herself in the early morning sunshine.

Satisfied with the shots I had taken I went to a fruiting fig tree behind the school where Ilyas said he saw a few  what could be Oriental-Pied Hornbills. It was a no show and on my way out of the school compound  ( in front of the guard house)  I looked upwards towards a tree right in the middle of the road divider and saw a large nest; it was hardly 20 ft off the ground. I was told by Pakcik Man, the school guard that there were two young birds which had flown  away from the nest about two weeks earlier and the nest now looked inactive.

DSC_5623

Without any high expectation I went back  there at about 5.30pm and to my surprise there they were, a young Goshawk on the nest and an  adult bird (partially hidden behind the tree branch). The fledgling was feeding on something that the adult had brought  to the nest, I assume that the fledgling  was still too young to hunt.

Image quality ( 2 pics above and below) is not very good, tried using a 1.4xTC on the D7000 + 300mm f/4.  I find that the quality of the   cropped images ‘without the TC setup’  is much better.

DSC_5648

The young bird flew from the nest to a nearby tree, I could see that she still has a lot to learn about flight in general. It was more like gliding from tree to tree than actually flying.DSC_5673
