It was as if he knew that we were shooting his pictures so  it didn’t take long for him to put up his best performance. Remaining on the leafless tree for almost 20 minute he posed  from all   sorts of angles.
Actually he was knocking away and moving up and down  looking for insect larvae, we saw him pull a couple from the  holes and crevices in the tree.
This is  a male with a beautiful red forecrown.

3 Grey & Buff Woodpeckers (Hemicircus concretus) local name: Belatuk Punggoh were foraging on the same tree .  The patterns on the  heart-shaped wings are just awesome. This  particular one is a female.

Grey-and-Buff Woodpecker (Hemicircus concretus sordidus). You can tell by the red  crown that it’s a male. He’s been putting on  extra styling gel , a very trendy bird!

This photo of the female was taken  in January 09. Notice  the difference in the colour of the crown.

Strange that both male and female lack   the black stripe  at the eye ( as per Robson’s Field Guide). Is this a new sub-species?
