Mountain Imperial Pigeons

30th October 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang.

They are pretty sizeable birds (41-53cm),  the majestic Mountain Imperial Pigeons. I guess It must have been my lucky day.  I was concentrating on a single pigeon  perching on the open branch when two other birds decided to fly in !

Once again the fig tree at the school is fruiting and attracting lots of birds.

Among them are the Pink-necked Pigeons,  the male with the pink  and the female in all green.

The figs  begin from green to bright yellow and finally to red. The birds  instinctively know the ones to pick.

Pink-Necked Green-Pigeons at SMK Tmn. Melawati

26 July 2009, Taman Melawati, Selangor

_DSC1242 Went the the School after receiving information that a flock of 5-8 Little Pigeons have been coming regularly to a nearby fruiting tree . When the birds came I could see that they were actually Pink-Necked Green-Pigeons (Treron vernans). Never mind, appreciate the info. At least it was an opportunity to improve on the existing photos.

Forestry Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) , Kepong 23rd May 2009

DSC_0288 Regular birders t0 FRIM have been telling me how it is a place full of surprises. We (myself and two elder brothers) went there to see if it’s true. With a constant flow of joggers and a loudspeaker blaring loud music at a nearby Family Day function we were not expecting this to be a good trip.

Things began to pick up when we saw a pair of hanging parrot (my first snap of the day which didn’t turn out well).

There was a tree in front of the Malay Tea House which was fruiting ( the only one), and it was a magnet for birds as we saw wave after wave of different types of birds flying in. We stationed ourselves beside the tree until it was time to pack up.
We were welcomed by a Black Giant Squirrel

The call of the Shama was too tempting; I had to go and check out the bird.
A male White-Rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus). He surveys the area from a higher perch before swooping down to catch his prey on the forest floor.

The female has slightly duller colours and
shorter tail than the male.
