23rd April 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highlands, Pahang

A beautiful  metallic blue  bird. He is part of a family of  4 Large NIltavas consisting an adult female, a juvenile male and juvenile female. I will be posting them seperately  due to time constrain to process all the RAW files.

Snowy-Browed Flycatcher

23rd April 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highlands, Pahang

I wrote in response to a comment by David Bakewell that I haven’t seen any Snowy-browed Flycatchers in Ulu Kali. Well…… here she is!

The Malays would say ‘ Hai…… panjang umur burung ni’  (Hai…. long life lah this bird)

Rufous-Winged Fulvetta

16th April 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

My only clear shot of a Rufous-winged fulvetta. She was  simply too close, right on the edge of my focusing limit (1.2m).

Mountain Tailorbird

16th April 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

It took me three trips to Ulu Kali for this tiny bird. They would go  foraging in and out of the thick ferns ,tracking them is a challenge in itself. This time I was quicker on the draw!  DSC_8146

Near Miss: Large Niltava Chick

16th April 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

From our car it looked like a strange looking leaf.  Just out of curiosity I told my brother to stop the car as we went  directly over, then I saw this…..  a little bird still asleep in the middle of the road!  Phew .. a very near miss. Took her to the roadside where she woke up and began hopping and taking short flights.

I was told later that this could be a Large Niltava chick. There was in fact  an adult Niltava in the area when we were taking these shots.

Scaly-Breasted Munias

6th March 2011, Taman Melawati, Selangor

Quite common in Taman Melawati, they go in a small flock of 5-10 birds to feed on grass seeds which form their main diet.

Male Rusty-Breasted Cuckoo

26th March 2011, Kemensah, Selangor

This male Cuckoo was calling loudly from  the trees  behind me while I was shooting the Bee-eaters in flight. He gave only a few second window for these shots. This is my first encounter with the male bird.

Practice Makes Perfect: BIF

26th March 2011, Kemensah, Selangor

I spent half the morning trying to get the hang of the camera’s 3D tracking Autofocus mode and the Bee-eaters were the best  targets to  practice shooting birds in flight since they go through the air  like an arrow.

These are not perfect but I’m slowly getting the feel of the  way to follow them through the viewfinder and the settings to  use.

Mountain Bulbul

27th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

One of the many species of Bulbuls in Malaysia. The Mountain Bulbul, as the name suggests is a species that is most at home in our highlands.

Malayan Laughingthrush

27th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

She came out to have a look at the insects on the tarmac  which had fallen victim to the  lure of the lights. After having a sneak peek at  ‘ today’s menu’ she decided that it wasn’t her taste and quickly disappeared into the bushes. Being Malayan I think she prefers ‘Nasi lemak & Teh tarik’.

Looking Good: Blue-Eared Kingfisher

6th March 2011, Taman Melawati, Selangor

I went to check on the pair of adult Blue-eared Kingfishers, and from what I saw they were doing just fine. The pair were seen hunting at their favourite spot, in fact from their favourite branch. Having this knowledge will gain you access to some pretty close-up shots of this tiny Kingfisher.

They were caring for a young bird the last time I saw them  about six months ago,  my guess is that the  young bird had  moved to a new area.

This one is a male with a blackish lower mandible.

Giving Me The Runaround: Bar-Throated Minla

27th March 2011, Gunung Ulu Kali, Genting Highland, Pahang

I’ve been to Gunung Ulu Kali three times over the last few weeks and I still  do not have a decent shot of this bird  to bring back. This day luck was on my side when two Minlas decided to  come out in the open.
