Collared Owlet
23rd April 2016, Awana, Pahang
Local Name: Burung Hantu Kecil
Scientific Name: Glaucidium brodiei
Equipment: Nikon 1 V3 + Nikkor AFS-VR 400mm f/2.8 ED-VR
Having eyes in the back of one’s head is definitely an advantage and that is what evolution has bestowed upon this tiny owl. Feather pattern which resembles the face of this owlet occurs at the back of her head, possibly to confuse potential attackers and predators thus allowing extra time for her to escape.

Barred Eagle Owls
Shah Alam & Kemensah, Selangor |
Saw this species of Owl in two different locations. The first was in Shah Alam and the second in Kemensah.
A mature adult bird
This Owl looks like a young bird judging by the white feathers on the wings. This is only my second Owl from Kemensah.

Brown Wood Owl : True Colours
30th October 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang. |
I wouldn’t have known that she was there had it not been for a helpful caretaker of a house who pointed out her position. It was an ideal perch along a quiet stretch of the Telekom Loop, a sheltered branch of a large tree and dimly lit … perfect for an owl during daytime. It is the same species of Owl which I photographed at nightime in front Jelai Resort a few weeks earlier. The colours are just so different in daylight. Half asleep, I don’t think she’d welcome any kind of disturbance.

Silent Killer: Brown Wood Owl
1st October 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang. |
A lifer from Fraser’s Hill, the Brown Wood Owl. She’s a large, magnificent bird with beautiful colours , full vermiculations on the belly and barrings on the tail feathers. She would perch quietly waiting for the opportunity to swoop down on the large rhinocerous beetles, grabbing them in mid air. It’s just amazing how stealthy they are, you neither hear any flapping of the wings nor the whooshing sound of the bird going through the air…… everything achieved in complete silence. Date & Time of Capture: 01/10/2011, 0:57:34 Exposure: 1/20 f/6.3 , ISO Speed Rating: ISO 3200 , Focal Length: 300 mm Distance to subject: 8.91 m, Exposure Program: Manual, Metering: Spot , Exposure Bias: 3 EV, Mirror lock-up with cable release Flash: Did not fire, lighting from a single LED torchlight . Camera & Lens: NIKON D7000, 300.0 mm f/4.0

Buffy Fish-Owl
26th February 2011, Kemensah , Selangor |
Buffy Fish-Owl. Local name : Ketupa Ketupu I’ve heard locals say that there are owls in the area. A friend who has a fish pond there mentioned that the owls would come to catch fish from his pond. For me, so far no owl…… until last Saturday, and with a little help from my friend ( his identity will be revealed in the next post). I saw a large bird flew down from a very tall tree to roost on a low branch about 200 ft away. Looked through the viewfinder and saw an owl with long ear tufts. Excited, that’s probably an understatement! My heart was pounding. Problem was, she was on the other side of a ditch with water knee-deep. Oh no! I wont let a small problem like this get between me and my Owl. Took a few long-range shots as security and then waded across carrying the gear on my shoulder. Crept nearer and nearer up the hill towards her, in my heart just hoping that she wouldn’t fly away. At last I was in good range for some decent shots. Just as I was about to push the button she flew onto a higher branch. Alas, now I have another factor to contend with…. severe backlighting. Anyway these are the result, The long-range shots My first recorded owl for Kemensah |
