Great Slaty Woodpeckers

23rd June  2012, , Bukit Rengit, Pahang

Local Name: Belatuk Gajah

Scientific Name: Mulleripicus pulverulentus

They are the world’s largest woodpeckers and to be able to see them flying together  gracefully  and  playing on this dead tree  was truly an amazing experience . This group is probably a family comprising of an adult male (left, with orange cheek patch) an adult female (topmost) and a juvenile (right).

Raffles Malkoha- hahahahaaaaa

Bukit Rengit, Pahang

I was attracted to the call of a pair of Raffles Malkoha (Rhinortha chlorophaeus). They are very shy birds.  Difficult to get a full view of the birds which preferred the security of the dense foliage.
Makes me chuckle every time I see these photos. The sound that they make resemble the moaning sound  made by my son  urging me to stop the car in the middle of the Karak Highway. He had a tummy ache that morning and had to go…… . I was doing 180 just to reach the next  Pump station!  Lewis Hamilton, you need Ilyas in your car to win the next Grand Prix.

Blue-Crowned Hanging-Parrot

20 June 2009, Bukit Rengit, Pahang

Other than the sighting of a few hornbills in flight( no photos), a few Broadbills and woodpecker, it was rather quiet at Bukit Rengit. This female Blue–Crowned Hanging Parrot (Loriculus galgulus) gave us something to cheer about and end the day on a high note. A lifer

Holy Water- you dont get this just anywhere!

20 June 2009, Bukit Rengit, Pahang.

Saw this male Banded Woodpecker (Chrysophlegma mineaceus) inspecting a hole in a tree. I thought maybe I’ll get lucky and get some shots of this bird in front of the nesting hole. Upon further observation, the hole looked kind of strange because it was facing upwards!
He was in fact inspecting a heart-shaped jacuzzi- the hole was full of water that had collected and he didn’t waste anytime stepping in.
