She was collecting bamboo leaves meaning that her nest was almost complete. Bamboo leaves are normally used as the inner lining for their nests.

Dusky Broadbills

15th July 2012, , Panti, Johor

Local Name: Takau Rimba Hujan

Scientific Name: Corydon sumatranus

One rarely gets to shoot  low angle shots of these broadbills as they tend to stay on the upper stories of the canopy. I guess bird luck was with me that day when  two  Duskies from a larger group  decided to dive down onto this low branch, probably a juvenile asking  to be fed by an adult.

Most other times this is probably how your image of this bird would be.

With their cartoon face and bright colours, they can surely brighten up any birder’s day in the forest.

Dusky Broadbills

16th September 2011, Kemensah, Selangor

I counted 15 Dusky Broadbills   in the area. They were a noisy bunch, calling loudly while they flew  from one end of the clearing to the other  in a group. Their behaviour resembles a group of mynas. Most of the birds tend to keep themselves  behind the  leaves, I was lucky to have this particular bird out in the open.

Green Broadbills: At last!

9th July 2011, Ulu Perdik, Selangor

You mean you haven’t got your Green Broadbills yet!  It’s the usual reaction that I get from other bird photographers/ birders when I tell them that I’ve yet to photograph this Broadbill.

Finally I can  close the book on  Broadbills after photographing my lastl species taht can be seen here  in Malaysia.

The day started with this beautiful female

It seems that the female is more approachable and tend to stay longer on one perch than the male. The same was observed when we saw the female again on 30/07/11. The male came and went in  a matter of a few seconds.

Most probably the same female shot on 30/07/11

Aaaaargh Missed!

5th March 2011, Bukit Tinggi, Pahang.

Usually what gets posted are the  images of  a frozen moment in time  which one feels is worth sharing. Have you ever wondered about the ‘moments of magic’ that you missed while shooting that couldn’t get posted simply  because the images are only in your head and not on your  disk?  The Aaaar..ghs, the Oh Nos,  the flicking of a finger, these are the common reactions of the missed moments. And in more severe cases, the pulling out of one’s hair,  banging one’s head against a hard object like a tree trunk or a boulder that you’re using as a hide, sound familiar?; or  hyperventilating and looking in the bag for a  sphygmomanometer !

Of course luck has a lot to do with the final outcome but it’s a constant reminder that you never ever  let your guard down when you’re out there or you could be doing one  or all of those things mentioned.

This is an example of one such  moment, caught by my brother Mohd Rosman Hassan while WE were shooting TOGETHER at Bukit Tinggi. ( Photos used with permission).
