A trogon appeared quite late in the afternoon at the Trogon Valley (Telecom Loop) but stayed high in the canopy against strong backlighting. Although the pictures on the camera screen was kind of blur I had a feeling that this was a new trogon for me. Then I saw the white breast patch and immediately I knew that it had to be a Red-headed Trogon.. a lifer Sorry for the quality of these photos for they are just record shots. The Trogon only decided to come down lower about half an hour before sunset and the condition was already very dark .

It’s not every day that you get to see a Greater Yellownape (Picus flavinuca), but on this day there were two of them foraging high up on this huge tree.
This is the wrayi subspecies which can be found in Peninsular Malaysia. |

There were about 20 photographers in front of Jelai Resort waiting or shooting various birds that came to feed on the insects that had fallen victim to the light. When somebody said ‘Sultan Tit coming’ they left whatever they were doing and immediately turned their big guns on this black & yellow bird. He sure has a majestic presence, moving from tree to tree picking moths for breakfast. Alas, the visual treat only lasted about 2 minutes before he was gone.

A pair of Verditer Flycatchers were happily going about their daily routine, sallying for insects which were attracted to the garden lights at Jelai Resort. A lifer from Fraser’s Hill, the Brown Wood Owl. She’s a large, magnificent bird with beautiful colours , full vermiculations on the belly and barrings on the tail feathers. She would perch quietly waiting for the opportunity to swoop down on the large rhinocerous beetles, grabbing them in mid air. It’s just amazing how stealthy they are, you neither hear any flapping of the wings nor the whooshing sound of the bird going through the air…… everything achieved in complete silence. Date & Time of Capture: 01/10/2011, 0:57:34 Exposure: 1/20 f/6.3 , ISO Speed Rating: ISO 3200 , Focal Length: 300 mm Distance to subject: 8.91 m, Exposure Program: Manual, Metering: Spot , Exposure Bias: 3 EV, Mirror lock-up with cable release Flash: Did not fire, lighting from a single LED torchlight . A record shot of the elusive Stork-billed Kingfisher. This species is quite common in the northern states but here in Selangor and the Klang valley they are not easy to find. Managed to locate one bird near a fish pond in Semenyih but he proved to be one tough cookie to shoot. |

I counted 15 Dusky Broadbills in the area. They were a noisy bunch, calling loudly while they flew from one end of the clearing to the other in a group. Their behaviour resembles a group of mynas. Most of the birds tend to keep themselves behind the leaves, I was lucky to have this particular bird out in the open.

A curious looking male Rufous Piculet observing what I was doing. He circled my location several times before disappearing into the bushes.
