Red Headed Trogon

30th September 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang.

A trogon appeared quite late in the afternoon at the Trogon Valley (Telecom Loop)  but stayed high in the canopy against strong backlighting. Although the pictures on the camera screen was kind of blur I had a feeling that this was a  new trogon for me. Then I saw the white breast patch and immediately I knew that it had to be a Red-headed Trogon.. a lifer Sorry for the quality of these photos for  they are just record shots. Greater Yellownape

It’s not every day that you get to see a Greater Yellownape (Picus flavinuca), but  on this day there were two of them   foraging high up on this huge tree.   This is the wrayi subspecies which  can be found in Peninsular Malaysia.

His Royal Highness : Sultan Tit

2nd October 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang.

There were about 20 photographers in front of Jelai Resort waiting or shooting various birds that came to feed on the insects that had fallen victim to the light. When somebody said ‘Sultan Tit coming’ they left whatever they were doing and immediately turned their big guns on this black & yellow bird. Fire-Tufted Barbet

The unmistakeable cicada-like  call announced the arrival of this colourful Barbet. He’s  one of the star  attraction in Fraser’s Hill.

Verditer Flycatchers

A pair of Verditer Flycatchers were happily  going about their daily routine, sallying for insects which were attracted to the garden lights at Jelai Resort. Silent Killer: Brown Wood Owl

1st October 2011, Fraser’s Hill, Pahang.

A lifer from Fraser’s Hill, the Brown Wood Owl. She’s a large,  magnificent  bird with beautiful colours ,  full vermiculations on the belly and barrings on the tail feathers. She would perch quietly  waiting for the opportunity to  swoop down on the large  rhinocerous beetles, grabbing  them in mid air. It’s just amazing how stealthy they are, you  neither hear any flapping of the wings nor the whooshing sound of the bird going through the air…… everything achieved  in complete silence.
