Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoo: Phew!

Local Name: Sewah Horsfield Scientific Name: Chrysococcyx basalis Equipment: Nikon D7000, Nikkor AFS 400mm f2.8ED VR+TC20EIII It taught me a lesson never to delete any photos until they have been properly scrutinised. I took  a lot of photos of this bird, deleted quite a few and kept only four just for record purposes. In my mind she was a Little Bronze-Cuckoo which I‘ve shot on many previous occasion, but I had noticed that she had strange looking streaks at the throat. Left the photos in the computer for three weeks thinking they were nothing special. Only after going through the Birds List of Peninsular Malaysia did I realise that there was another specie of Bronze Cuckoo. The Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoo is a ‘vagrant’ and according to the information I received, this could be only the second record for Peninsular Malaysia.     The barring are limited  to the flanks.

Javan Mynas

Local Name: Burung Gembala Kerbau Scientific Name: Acridotheres javanicus Back in my hometown for the Raya celebration. Nothing much to shoot except for these mynas. They provided some entertainment for my itchy trigger finger after a month of rest during the fasting month of Ramadhan.

Dusky Broadbills

Local Name: Takau Rimba Hujan Scientific Name: Corydon sumatranus One rarely gets to shoot  low angle shots of these broadbills as they tend to stay on the upper stories of the canopy. I guess bird luck was with me that day when  two  Duskies from a larger group  decided to dive down onto this low branch, probably a juvenile asking  to be fed by an adult.                                 Most other times this is probably how your image of this bird would be.

Blue-Eared Barbet

Local Name: Takur Akar Scientific Name: Megalaima australis cyanotis Measuring approximately 17-18cm they are one of the smaller barbets found here in Peninsular Malaysia. This particular bird is a female with dull forehead and crown. Their facial markings and head details never cease to amaze me.

Rufous-Fronted Babbler
