Oh No, Not the Firing Squad!

2nd January 2010,  Kemensah, Selangor These are record shots of the Pin-Striped Tit-Babbler. From  the five cameras that were pointed towards her direction, these were the only  shots obtained of this bird that morning!  I don’t  think she’s ever seen so many people waiting for her to pop out from the bushes.

Pink Watershine Lipstick: Dusky Broadbill

There must be some kind of telepathic  communication going on. It was as if they knew  what I was looking for. I  had Dusky Broadbills (Corydon sumatranus) in my head  the day before and there they were (3 of them), giving us quite a reception with their calls.  A week after getting  my  lifer  Banded Broadbill this was truly a new year bonus. Flying Heart: Grey & Buff Woodpecker

1st January 2010,  Kemensah, Selangor

3 Grey & Buff Woodpeckers (Hemicircus concretus) local name: Belatuk Punggoh were foraging on the same tree .  The patterns on the  heart-shaped wings are just awesome.This  particular one is a female.

Lovey Dovey : Long-Billed Spiderhunters

1st January 2010,  Kemensah, Selangor

Hanging  upside down from the ceiling is not my idea of  how to impress a lady, I’m glad that we humans do not have to do this. Well It’s different with these Spiderhunters. I’m not sure whether this is part of the mating ritual of the Long-Billed Spiderhunters or they were just flirting. The pair flew in and  clung themselves to the underside of  a banana leaf. They arched their backs and started moving their heads  left and right. One of them started hovering below and ‘kissed’ the partner with the long beak. Then they flew off- ………………….. away from  prying eyes! A Lifer.

Adult Indian Cuckoo

13th December 2009,  Kg Paya Jaras, Sungai Buloh , Selangor

I was assigned  a task as the photographer for my niece’s engagement ceremony. I must say that I’m not used to photographing  wingless subjects ! After it was over I went out  around the house for some air  when I saw this Indian Cuckoo (Cuculus micropterus) perched high up on a Durian tree.

Revealed: Banded Broadbill

27th December 2009,  Kemensah, Selangor I could hear their distinctive call every time I went into Kemensah. They were definitely there but so far they had refuse to show themselves. It all changed today when  two Banded Broadbills (Eurylaimus javanicus) flew in and landed quite close to where I was.  This is my long awaited Lifer. It’s not clear from these photos whether it’s a male or female.
