This is the first time that I was able to capture  a  male Purple–Naped Sunbird   with the purple colouration actually visible!

When he gets excited he raises the feathers above the nape exposing more of the brilliant purple feathers.

Olive-Backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis) busy with its early morning routine. Was ill-prepared for birding since the main reason for the trip was a wedding. These were shot handheld with the 300mm non VR lens & TC, turned out OK.

Met Mikebirder waiting for his Black Capped Babbler near the Telekom tower . The bird didn’t make an appearance so  Mike suggested that we try a different trail  today where his buddy had found  a Straw headed Bulbul.

This  trail  yielded a few lifers for me . This is one of them, a female Purple-naped Sunbird (Hypogramma hypogrammicum).

I didn’t see her  feeding on the insect larvae instead she  had a couple  mouthful of the ‘cotton candy’ that protected the  nest.

This male Olive-Backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis) seemed to have lost his mate. He kept calling for her from this papaya tree, oblivious of my presence about 5ft away.

Gymnast Sunbird Gone Bananas

Kota Bharu, Kelantan, 5th June 2009.
Was testing my flashgun on this Heart of a Banana Tree (local name:Jantung Pisang) when I spotted some movements through my viewfinder. A male Brown-Throated Sunbird (Anthreptes malacensis) had landed on the heart and performing gymnastics to get to the banana flowers. Here are some of the movements: how did he score?
