Local Name: Pekaka BukitScientific Name: Alcedo euryzona peninsulaeA male Blue-banded Kingfisher was hunting near a small waterfall. Compared to other places the chances of seeing this Kingfisher are better in the northern states of the peninsular, and that was where I found this little guy. Sitting quietly on the rocky river bank, he would dive down to catch small fishes.

| Last week he didn’t give me enough time to get ready and there was no second chance. This time I was ready and waiting, thumb on the trigger button. Didn’t have to wait very long (about 5 minutes) before he appeared on his regular perch, the overflow pipe.
To see a Blue-Banded Kingfisher so close to Kuala Lumpur is just amazing. One big blue ribbon for Kemensah.

| I’ve been on Mission Blue Banded for three weeks now. He is one elusive Kingfisher; no pictures to show over that period although I’ve sighted him several times . It was almost 8.30am when I reached the target area, a dimly lit stretch of the stream beneath a clump of tall bamboos where he had been previously spotted . Looked through the viewfinder as I was about to complete the equipment setup and to my surprise there he was on the overflow pipe. Only managed two hurriedly taken shots before he disappeared. A male Blue-Banded Kingfisher (Alcedo euryzona peninsulae), a lifer. Mission Blue Banded is only half accomplished- will still continue to get better pictures.
