With their cartoon face and bright colours, they can surely brighten up any birder’s day in the forest.

Birds of Bentong

22nd & 23rd  May 2010, Bentong, Pahang.

DSC_0148

We had a family gathering  at my brother-in-law’s orchard, a beautiful place  on high ground with the hills of Bentong as the backdrop.

I was curious as to what species of bird  I would find there. Spent 2 hours on Saturday afternoon and 3 hours Sunday morning  to see what I could photograph.

The result was quite interesting.

Either a female Brown-Throated  or Red throated Sunbird  (shot by Ilyas).  I’m more inclined to go for the latter  because of the orange tinge at the throat.

Nesting: Black & Yellow Broadbill

27th March 2010, Kemensah, Selangor

Saw a pair of Black & Yellow Broadbills, one was resting and the other was finishing off his lunch. I hadn’t realize that the pair were having a break from nest building.

Stumbled upon their half completed nest  and stayed there for about an hour to observe the birds bringing in materials. They had chosen a location directly above a  stream,  a similar behavior to the Black & Red Broadbills. It was fascinating to see both partners actively participating  in the building process.

The birds alternately ferry in dry leaves, small twigs and roots  approximately every 5 minutes. At one point the male bird dived into the nest and started pushing out from inside.

Female Black & Yellow Broadbill

I’ve shot Black & Yellow Broadbills (Eurylaimus ochromalus) before but they were always the male birds. This time it was the female which made an appearance at the photo shoot. Notice the broken black collar of the female as compared to the continuous collar of the male.

I’ve been testing viewing this blog on a lower resolution screen (1024x768) with Mozilla Firefox 3.5. I found that Firefox allows you to zoom out and view the entire page without clipping the right margin regardless of the screen resolution. This is not the case with Internet Explorer  although it gives a sharper view of the photos compared to Firefox.

Black & Yellow Broadbill- just beautiful.

27th September 2009, Kemensah, Selangor

_DSC0142

I was  surprised to see  three Black & Yellow Broadbills (Eurylaimus ochromalus) on  branches at low level. Usually they are very high up in the canopy  making  photographing these beautiful birds ever so difficult. This  is a male with a full black collar.

I don’t think that  anyone can ever get bored of shooting the Black & Yellow. With striking colours  and a cute face, they are simply adorable.

Black & Yellow Broadbill of Kemensah

11 July 2009, Kemensah, Selangor

Other than the fruits, birding was also excellent today. Myself and Ilyas hiked to the dam area for the first time, to look for hornbills. No hornbills ( we heard them) but we found two beautiful birds (lifers). This is one of them.

The colours are simply stunning. The Black & Yellow Broadbill (Eurylaimus ochromalus) is one beautiful bird. They are canopy birds and are normally beyond the range of my lens. Tried to photograph one in Bukit Rengit and it was just one tiny speck in the entire picture! But today four of them were well within range, and making sounds as if a helicopter was taking off.

This is a male judging from the continous black collar . I couldn’t get a clear shot of the female, she was hiding behind the leaves.
