Bronze Drongo

7th May 2011, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya, Pahang

Scientific name: (Dicrurus aeneus)

It may look like a bronze statuette of a bird but I can assure you that this is the real deal.

There is no clear distinction between the sexes in this species so I’m not sure if  it’s a male or a female. She was sunning herself in the morning light and the side lighting accentuated her beautiful bronze like  feathers around her throat and breast.

Hill Blue-Flycatcher

7th May 2011, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya, Pahang

Scientific name: (Cyornis banyumas)

They were calling loud and clear. Managed to locate the pair after a brief scan of the area. My previous sighting of this species was at Awana on a foggy morning so these are my improvement shots.

Blue Nuthatch

7th May 2011, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya, Pahang

Blue Nuthatches were out in numbers, moving up and down the tree branches. Most of the time you would see them  with their heads towards the ground.

Pygmy Wren-Babbler

7th May 2011, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya, Pahang

Scientific name: Pnoepyga pusilla

It was semi-darkness;  that’s how I would describe the condition I was shooting in. This tiny bird loves this dimly lit  and moist environment. When she finally emerged  I could only see a dark object ( the bird) moving around in the dark. Most of the time I wasn’t sure what the camera  was focusing on, it was a case of  fire & hope that at the end of the session there would be something ‘useable’ on the card.

After an hour long wait, these are the results. Out of 40 odd photos, only  4 are worth posting. The exposures have been adjusted substantially  so that the bird would  actually be visible!

This is a pale morph adult, she measures between 7.5-9.5cm.

Exif data: ISO 1600, f/4, 1/40s ( no flash)

Focus was  a real issue since I found out later that the camera was selecting anything  that was brighter than the bird. I got lucky with the first two photos when the focus was spot on.

Rhinocerous Hornbill

31st October 2010, Old Pump House Road, Genting Highland, Pahang

Local Name: Enggang Badak.  Scientific Name: (Buceros rhinoceros)

My head was in auto mode, searching for the source of the loud  ‘whooshing’ sound. Then I saw this female Rhinocerous Hornbill stopping on a nearby tree.- a truly magnificent sight.

Although quite  common in the  highlands capturing decent photos of this quick moving bird poses a great challenge.

Lesser Yellownape

31st October 2010, Old Pump House Road, Genting Highland, Pahang

I was taking a break below this tree when my eyes was attracted to some movements  from behind the giant ferns; It was this female Woodpecker (Picus chlorolophus) pecking away . A lifer

My only decent shot .

2nd Time Lucky: Black-Thighed Falconet

31st October 2010, Old Pump House Road, Genting Highland, Pahang

I looked from my  bedroom  window and saw that  the hills of Genting was very clear, no fog and no signs of possible rain. OK Genting it is for today, It’s been more than a year since my last trip  to this location.

Yes it was a bright and clear day when I arrived at the gates around 7.40am,  Pretty quiet, I just hoped that it wouldn’t be a day of many NOs …… No fog No mist No rain No joggers and……. No birds!  About 1 km along the road I  saw her, high up on a dead tree trunk, a lone Black-Thighed Falconet. She’s one of the smallest raptors in the world. Just too high for any good photos. Then proceeded along the track to shoot other birds in a bird wave.

_DSC0131

I saw her again on my way back, about 150m from the entrance gate. This time I was in luck, she was only about 30 ft away and just slightly above my eye level!  Shot a few frames but I wasn’t too happy , too many obstructions. In case you’re wondering why check out the video!

Managed to find a location with cleaner foreground & background.

28 June 2009, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya

I will end the Old Pump House Road series with this request for help.

She’s really tiny, slightly bigger than your thumb. Cute little fella, a pair of them. Both look the same. Been trying to ID this bird without success. Any idea?

Falco.net.my - not online

28 June 2009, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya

  • They missed me so much that they followed me to Gohtong Jaya, all the way from Kelantan! Here they are again in a more natural setting ( not the telegraph/lamp post this time). A pair of Black-Thighed Falconets (Microhierax fringillarius). Those talons!

_DSC0369

  • Just kidding!, actually these are different birds  from the ones in Pendek, Kelantan.

Drongo or Cuckoo- Please decide.

28 June 2009, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya

Are you a Drongo or are you a Cuckoo? Well, they have decided that you are actually a Cuckoo impersonating a Drongo. This specimen is a juvenile Drongo Cuckoo (Surniculus lugubris), you can tell by the spots on the body which will eventually disappear as they mature.

_DSC0450 This bird had just caught a caterpillar and was giving it a real bashing against the tree branch before finally swallowing it.

_DSC0330

This quick moving Himalayan Striped Squirrel (Tamiops macclellandi) came so close and stopped to feed in front of us. Talk about luck! After finishing her succulent meal, she was gone in a jiffy.

My First Hornbill- It’s Great!

28 June 2009, Old Pump House Road, Gohtong Jaya

They probably could hear us on Genting Highland! There was a lot to cheer about for the four of us, myself, two elder brothers and my son Ilyas. This was the first Hornbill for all of us.

It was raining since early morning in Taman Melawati but we still took a chance to go. When we arrived it was still raining! Decided to start walking up at about 9.00am, still drizzling. Was hit by a minor bird wave in front of the entrance gate. Continued up the slope for about 500m when we heard the familiar sound of a Hornbill. All hands on deck and eyes scanning the area, we finally saw him, on a huge tree about 100m from where we were. No way to get closer, severely limited by a 400mm lens and still misty, these are highly cropped photos of my lifer, a male Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis).

I gave myself a small birding license after getting my first Broadbill. So after almost 2 yrs of serious birding this Hornbill is the license I was really waiting for!
