Whimbrels of Kampong Sabak

22 September 2009, Kampong Sabak, Kelantan

_DSC1411
A pair of Whimbrels (Numenius phaeopus) flew in after the Stilts  had left. They are quite sizeable birds. These two  didn’t want to get their feet wet. They will learn soon enough where dinner is.

Went back to Kota Bharu for a week during the  Hari Raya break. Managed to squeeze in half a day of birding at Kampong Sabak. As we anticipated the waders were there.

Observed a flock of feeding Black-Winged Stilts (Himantopus himantopus).

They were unaware of  the  mist net erected  nearby by unscrupulous locals to catch  unsuspecting victims.

Used to be quite difficult to find these birds but lately I’ve been bumping into the Chestnut-Bellied Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus sumatranus) quite regularly.

No flash and I like what I see! A bit more button pushing  and dial tweaking but the result is worth it.

A Stripe-Throated Bulbul  (Pycnonotus finlaysoni) taking a breather, away from the hot sun. I was doing the same during  this fasting month, most of the time using the jeep to get from one location to the other, even for short distances.

This male Olive-Backed Sunbird (Cinnyris jugularis) seemed to have lost his mate. He kept calling for her from this papaya tree, oblivious of my presence about 5ft away.

Long-Tailed Macaques  drying off while enjoying each other’s company. They are playing a game called ‘ I find your Kutu (flea), you find my Kutu’. I think we humans should try more of this, good for bonding!
