Speckled Piculet: Better Luck Next Time

Local Name: Belatuk Belang Scientific Name: Picumnus innominatus Equipment: Nikon 1 V2 + Nikkor AFS-VR 400mm f/2.8G   I’ve seen this bird once before, since then I‘ve been hoping that one day I would be able to bring home some decent photographs of this fast moving little beauty. And what a let down. The  only photo of  the face and underparts turned out blurry. I’ll get her next time; hope it wont be another ten years of waiting! It’s this kind of frustration and  at the same time the excitement that keep you going.

Well, it was my day for bad  lifer-shots. Previously it was the Rufous –fronted Babbler. Usually these wouldn’t have made the cut but since this  is my lifer  I ‘d slot it in for record purposes. A  male Rufous Piculet with the yellow forecrown.   I had shot the female before this.

London, New York , Tokyo. No, It was Ipoh, Seremban , Kemensah in 36 hours! Ipoh to conduct a project  briefing, Seremban for an overnight family function and  whatever daylight left  late Sunday afternoon in Kemensah. It was this little bird  who made my day, A  tiny Rufous Piculet, she flew onto this open  branch for about 3 seconds and came so close that these were almost full frame shots. Saw a Piculet last week but it wasn’t this close.

I’ve shot Rufous Piculets before but they were either too dark , too blurry or too far. Not this time though Opportunity  presented itself as I was trekking back to the jeep after a not so productive day. She lingered in the area for almost an hour but  her size ( about the size of your thumb) made her extremely  difficult to spot.

A very difficult bird to spot, this tiny Rufous Piculet (Sasia abnormis) local name Belatuk Kecil blends well with its surrounding. This was only my second encounter with this bird and hopefully not the last.

Startled a Rufous Piculet ( local name: Belatuk Kecil ). Nearly dropped her catch. . . . . . . . . Just discovered that my son Ilyas had taken a photo (partly hidden) of a female Rufous-Collared Kingfisher in Kemensah a week ago which I earlier thought was a Common Kingfisher. I intend to get better photos of the Blue-Eared Kingfisher as well so maybe Mission Kingfisher is next on the agenda.	Seeing a Rufous Piculet for the first time, it struck me as to how small the bird was. It’s really tiny!
